I landed my first magazine job purely by accident whilst I was at uni, and haven’t looked back since. Whether I’m dealing with hectic deadlines, back to back meetings, proof reading like crazy or sending my hundredth email of the day, I honestly love every single second and couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. Plus working at CLEO means that quite literally, I get paid to read a magazine all day. How can you not love that?

After watching 90210 the other day, obsessing over Gossip Girl, and remembering back to the good ol’ days of The OC, I got to thinking about how TV has just made those torturous years of teenage angst seem like all kinds of awesome. Blair and co almost make you yearn to be in high school again. Which I suppose would be easy if your school was in Manhattan, and your lunch times were spent on the stairs of the Met!
I don’t know about you, but when I think back to 16, I think about being awkward, dealing with pimples and puppy fat, and all-consuming crushes. It certainly didn’t involve Chanel. Or super hot boys who spoke like they could write a speech for Barack Obama.
For some reason teen drama doesn’t necessarily mean ‘teen’ drama on TV. It means here’s a 24 year old actor passing themselves off as 18, and here’s some completely far out situation that any normal teenager would never in a million years really find themselves in.
I worked on a teen mag for a few years, and after dealing with teenagers on a day-to-day basis, I did come to the conclusion that teens nowadays are in fact ,well, cooler.
But despite this innate coolness, I still (thankfully!) never came across a teenager who was drugged by her psycho friend the night before she was due to sit for the HSC a la Serena on GG. But I guess that’s what makes it good television. I’m sure watching someone studying in the library wouldn’t nearly be as exciting...
