These days we’re bombarded by ads for products that claim they can help us lose weight fast, but a vintage advertisement shows it hasn’t always been this way.

An ad unearthed by the UK’s Daily Mail and estimated to be from the 1930s – 1960s shows most women sought to gain weight rather than shed it.

“Gain weight!” the ad for a weight-gain product reads, with a curvy model in a high-waisted 1950s style bikini pictured to the side.

“Amazing Scientific Plan Adds New Attractive Pounds and Inches”.

“As fast as you want or you pay nothing!”

“Start gaining weight today…and keep on gaining healthy pounds and inches!”

In a world where skinny is in vogue, it’s a great reminder that trends come and go, and we should be happy with the figures we’re born with.

What do you think of the ad? We’re talking about it right now on Facebook and Twitter.

It's not the only retro gold we've unearthed this week. Check out this video from the 1930s that predicts what people will be wearing in the year 2000, with hysterical results.
