Question:

I need to get a degreaser for my hair but have absolutely no idea where to start. I have really fine hair, could you recommend a good product? from Niki

Answer:

There are lots of great oil control shampoos but it’s important to know  fine and oily hair is hereditary and, due to less hair surface area, it only takes a normal amount of natural oil produced by skin to make fine hair look greasy and limp.  So people with fine hair need to shampoo more often to keep their hair looking clean and full.

According to Megan Yabsley, Education Manager, de Lorenzo, “ The skins natural oil is called Sebum and it is produced by the Sebaceous Oil Gland just under the surface of the skin, alongside the hair follicle. It’s essential to have some sebum on the skin surface to protect moisture loss and bacterial infection.

The best solution is to avoid 'quick fixes' like baby powder as talc can cause a rancid scalp and flakiness and wash hair regularly with a shampoo and conditioner especially designed with a sebum regulating factor.  Look for natural ingredients like watercress, Ivy and rocket - which work to control oil and cleanse the scalp and don’t overload your hair with too much product.

To win the oily hair battle try: Prescriptive Solutions Control shampoo and conditioner (‘revive’ or ‘Intense’ depending on how oily), $25.95
De Lorenzo Essentials Absorb Dry Shampoo Spray, $10.00

  • I occasionally get a spot or two and also have senitive cheeks that get rosy really easily. Can you recommend a good foundation or alternative (compact powder shows up all my dry spots!). Also what's the best way to match a foundation to my skin tone?
