Last year I was lucky enough to score a spot on a Contiki tour of the US. After six action-packed days checking out the sights and delights of New York, I had a few days on my own to let loose in this oh-so-crazy city.
My fellow journo/travel buddy happened to be a huge graffiti fan and took me to see da hood, so to speak. We went to Harlem — a district next to the Bronx (you know, where JLo was from!) to see a whole lotta famous work there. Next we jumped on the train and headed to Five Points — a renowned open-air museum for graffiti art.
It was all so amazing and inspiring, that since then, I've had a slight graffiti infatuation. Hence, when my pal told me about the Stencil Festival, I thought I must share!
The Melbourne Stencil Festival started in 2004 during the height of street art activities in the city's lanes and alleyways. Since then, it has become the premier annual street art event in Australia. Celebrating its fifth year, the 2008 event will present three major exhibitions:
Five Continents — Six Artists, which features artists from around the world including A1one from Iran, Scottish stencil artist Klingatron, Sao Paulo artist Daniel Melim, former US soldier Larry Cyr, Cape Town artist Kudzanai Chiurai and Melbourne's own Ralf Kempken.
DeVinyl08 showcases limited-edition vinyl toys that have been submitted by artists from around the world.
Group Show is dedicated to upcoming artists and includes the Emerging Artist Award.
If you are in Melbs next weekend, be sure to check it out! There are a lot of different activities running, as well as a charity auction where you can buy some kick-arse art for yourself! For more info, go to www.stencilfest.com.
