Here's something I never imagined myself blogging about: I've got a growing obsession with Ivanka Trump. Random, I know. And when I mentioned it to our editor Sarah last week she gave me the strangest look I've ever seen her give.
I think it was partly shock at me professing a girl crush for someone who's not ordinarily been on the girl-crush radar, but I'm also guessing the look was due to the fact she was trying to work out why (of all the people I could have decided on) Ivanka had warranted my adoration and respect. Here's the reason …
My intrigue with the daughter of Donald started a year or so ago, around the same time she started popping up on The Apprentice alongside her dad, and in the fashion pages of lots of the US mags. But it was cemented last week when I read an interview with her online. Ivanka's got the four Ss –– she's smart, sexy, stylish and, most importantly, self-sufficient.
Here is a girl who (given the family fortune) could have done a Paris and flitted around the party scene and made a name for herself, just by being a Trump. But, instead of going to Daddy and asking for money, she asked him for a job.
Working 19-hour days and trying to absorb as much of the business as possible, she worked her way up to managing enormous projects. According to Forbes magazine, she's the youngest corporate board director in history. And while I'm fully aware most people wouldn't have that opportunity at such a young age without a helping hand, I still can't but help but compare her to other heiresses we know.
And to top it all off, Ivanka is just as comfy on the cover of a magazine or on a catwalk. She's got impeccable style and she's comfortable with her femininity. And like most people I obsess over, I would kill for the girl's wardrobe and her collection of shoes!
Perhaps Ivanka sums it up best herself in a recent interview with Town and Country magazine. "I'm sure that there are children of very successful parents who are paralysed by the wealth and success of their family. They prefer to do nothing instead of taking risks," she says.
"Some have no drive –– they're spoiled, clearly. If you have nothing to live for during the day, then sure, why not spend all hours of the night in a club? I just can't imagine anything worse than spending my day figuring out what I was going to wear that night."
And if that's not someone to aspire and look up to, then I don't know who is.
