Have you ever wondered what your favourite kids-show performers are doing these days? You know, Benita and George from Play School, Mr Squiggle or Peter Combe? Well, at least the latter of that group is still performing on stages all over the country. And not just for kids; he's performing for us gen Yers who loved him all those years ago — probably at the next festival you go to. Serious.
Today I interviewed Peter Combe and I was honestly more nervous to meet him than any other interview subject. Then I sat back and thought about why I was so nervous to meet someone whose music I haven't heard in 15 years. Well, that is a bit of a lie; my friend dug up one of his CDs about three months ago and I've been listening ever since!
I guess when you're a young whippersnapper, anybody you see on TV — no matter their status — seems "famous" to you. And unless someone dismisses that idea, that person will stay frozen in your mind as they once were. In saying this, I was a little scared that Peter would be some sad washed-up old man still trying to sing. But how wrong could I be? He looked just as I remembered, albeit sans Hawaiian shirt, and was still passionate about making music for children. He's a dying breed, you might say.
Peter is playing at Manly Fishos on Friday night (July 18), and at Sydney's Metro Theatre on Saturday night (July 19). I'll be there, newspaper hat in tow. No shame, just happily singing along to songs that defined my childhood. Hey, I'm a proud member of the ABC "Kids are the Reason I had a Fulfilling Childhood" group on Facebook! See you there!
