But it is another of their clients, Lucky Strike cigarettes, smoked by almost everyone on the show — including a pregnant Betty Draper — that has people concerned that the show is glamorising smoking.
"I think they should at least have a disclaimer at the front of the show,"
Desperate Housewives actress and lung cancer survivor Kathryn Joosten has said. "Saying smoking is relevant to the time and place with the subject matter we're dealing with and it is not recommended because it causes cancer."
In their defence,
Mad Men's creators plead that they are just sticklers for representing historical details accurately. To the point of making sure that a weather forecast for that day is represented by what the cast wears, and that Don Draper's watch is of just the right vintage.
And just in case you were worried about the cast smoking up a storm — Don at least, played by Jon Hamm, is smoking prop cigarettes: "A blend of some kind of herbs and spices that burn and look like real cigarettes," Hamm told
Time magazine. "But there's no nicotine or tar."
What do you think? Should Mad Men come with a disclaimer?
