Yes, it's possible to get your own silver-spoon lifestyle, even if your surname isn't van der Woodsen...

Eerywhere you look these days, it seems a new It Girl appears, complete with a mile-long pedigree and family fortune to match.

Pretty young things, such as Peaches Geldof and Lydia Hearst, were born into wealth and fame, so it’s not really surprising that they’ve gone on to achieve amazing things.

But, while it’s easy to envy their bulging trust funds and rock-star beaus, for every Paris Hilton, there’s a dozen unknown heiresses (albeit still with a truckload of money us plebs could never fathom ...). What sets these golden girls apart is their ambitious attitude, and that’s something that anyone can have, regardless of whether or not you have your own reality TV show.

Strut your stuff

Many women are shy about letting people know of their achievements, feeling that they might be perceived as a show off if they do. But take a leaf out of Paris’ book when it comes to talking yourself up. Whether she’s promoting perfume, acting in a musical or being paid just to turn up at parties, you have to hand it to the girl – she acts like it’s totally her right to be there.

Confidence, even if you have to fake it a little, will help you get where you want to be. People rarely feel 100 per cent sure about anything, so don’t let some little niggling doubts hold you back. If you come across as being passionate, people can’t help but be drawn to your energy.

Network it

Every time you see a pic of Peaches Geldof, she seems to be hanging off the arm of some pasty-but-chic hipster, such as über-blogger Cory Kennedy or model Daisy Lowe. Her brazen penchant for staying close with the cool crowd has helped her score gigs at indie mag Nylon and a role as the face of Dotti.

So if you meet someone who you think might be able to help you out, let them know. The concept of networking does have a whiff of eighties cheesiness about it, so it’s important to be genuine – mentioning is good, stalking is bad. If, for example, you come across a person who works in an industry you’d love to be part of, don’t be afraid to tell them – you never know what sort of opportunities might come out of it.

Networking isn’t just about work either. If you’re single, don’t keep it a secret – the person you’re chatting to might have a hot male friend who they think is perfect for you. The simple act of putting your goals out there for all to see means you’ll be much more likely to achieve them.
