Quickly becoming an icon herself, the Aussie supermodel shares her look-good secrets.

How do you keep your body catwalk ready?

“I go to the gym when I can. I love exercise, it clears my head of anything I’m worried about – or if I’m feeling a bit ‘blah’ – and just makes it so much easier for me to calm down, concentrate and have more energy. I like to mix it up by walking down the bottom of New York, then through Battery Park.

I ride my bicycle in the summer to Central Park, take spin classes or see a pilates instructor.

Have Your Say

"She might look like an alien to you but I think she looks like an earthling.. GRISHANYC"

Most of the time I just do my own routines. It’s good to keep it fun, I’m not someone who can just stay on the one machine.”

Do you worry about paparazzi snapping you with no make-up?

“No. I wear tinted moisturiser most days, but that’s basically it. There have been so many faces and make-up looks I haven’t necessarily liked and don’t have a say in. So it’s almost like ‘Who is the real Gemma?’. My look is always changing, so having a bare face is great because I can let my skin breathe when I’m not working.”

Ever had a beauty disaster?

“Oh burns! Burns, burns, burns! And these were not self-inflicted. I’ve had curling tongs burn my forehead. One time I had my wisdom teeth out and had to do a photo shoot with these ‘chubby bunny’ cheeks – they had to retouch them out. I’ve had my hair ripped out by extensions so often. I singed my eyelashes one time on a candle (my fault). A lot of these things are unintentional, like when you’re first learning how to take out hair extensions; you just want to run from one show to the other and you rip them out.”

Can you do your own make-up?

“A lot of the time I feel pathetic when I do my own make-up and hair at home because I can’t do it as well as the people who do my make-up on set. Luckily I’m a very simple person with my make-up look and I don’t necessarily need to know how to do a full face.”

Do you have a beauty icon?

“My beauty icon is Lauren Hutton. I think she’s amazing, natural and has a beautiful spirit. When we met she blew me away and gave me great advice which made a big difference when I first started modelling in New York. I was at an event honouring her with a couple of friends from Perth; she sat us down and told us to always take time to rejuvenate by going somewhere you love. She gave us advice on love, men and beauty, it was so lovely of her. I really admire the way she has aged naturally and seems to radiate a great spirit.”

What puts you in a good mood?

“If I’ve had a really bad day I come home, blast music and just dance. Even if it’s just stupidly.”

  • Mary, I agree. I think she looks like an alien.

  • She's not conventionally beautiful and that is the appeal. The fact that she looks alien. It's the fashion world, not every day life. If she looked like everyone else, why would anyone think that is anything special? She's meant to enhance the clothes and product, quite simply she stands out and therefore so does whatever she's trying to sell. That's how the moedlling world picks their stars.
