CLEO is anti-sun bed and believes solariums should be fully supervised and only accessible to people over 18. Join our cause so we can save lives (maybe yours).
Here in Australia, laws forbid people under the age of 18 to smoke tobacco or drink alcohol, due to their associated dangers. And yet, this same group is allowed unlimited and unregulated access to solariums – despite melanoma being the most common type of cancer among 15 to 30-year-olds.
And it gets worse. Unregulated, coin-operated solariums can now be found in gyms and shopping centres.
If you think that a quick session at the solarium won’t do any serious damage, you’re wrong. The average tanning bed emits up to five times more radiation than the midday sun. A study done by the Queensland Institute of Medical Research shows that one trip to a solarium increases the risk of developing melanoma by 22 per cent, compared to a person who has never used a sun bed.
The study also shows that solarium users under the age of 35 increase their melanoma risk by 98 per cent.
We, at CLEO, believe legislation should restrict solarium access to those under the age of 18. We want to ensure warning notices are placed in all cubicles and foyers and, most importantly, that all unsupervised solarium operations Australia-wide are banned. We need your help to make this happen.
