The nineties are back

The era that most people would rather forget is making a comeback.

11:47AM, May 23

Every era inevitably has a moment again and it seems like the decade of flannel shirts, boy bands and classic films like Reality Bites and Clueless, is back.

This month British teen pop band S Club (formerly S Club 7) will be touring the country along with other ‘90s acts Big Brovaz, Eiffel 65, N-Trance and NKOTBSB (a sweet amalgam of New Kids on the Block and the Backstreet Boys.)

Even Aqua of “Barbie Girl” fame staged a comeback sans the crazy hairdos and outfits.

But it doesn’t just stop at ‘90s music – sequels to big movie franchises American Pie and Scary Movie are coming to a cinema near you. Some of our fave ‘90s TV starlets are hitting our screens again with Mayim Bialik from Blossom Now appearing in The Big Bang Theory and My So Called Life’s Claire Danes starring as a CIA agent in Homeland.

And Melissa Joan Hart from Sabrina the Teenage Witch has teamed up with fellow nineties star, Joey Lawrence for their hit show Melissa and Joey.

Of course the fashion world is also joining in. On the catwalk, D&G is riding the new wave of nostalgia with ‘90s print handkerchief dresses, while Isabel Marant has traded Cons for chunky high tops and flannel shirts.

For inspiration, look to 90s Runway (90srunway.tumblr.com). It’s dedicated to the most outlandish and enduring looks of the time, but remember: the line between ironically cool and downright daggy can be hard to discern, so beware of acid wash denim and looks reminiscent of Beverly Hills 90210’s Brenda Walsh.
