On the weekend I went to All Tomorrow’s Parties, a new music festival curated by Nick Cave as part of this year’s Sydney Festival. I believe the most important element of festival preparation is choosing what to wear. Here’s my list of rules:
1. Close-toed, flat shoes: Stomped upon feet leads to festival rage.
2. No skirts: Easier to sit in.
3. Shoulder covering: Sunburn is evil.
4. Multiple layers: To avoid boiling during the day and freezing at night.
5. Try to look vaguely pretty.

This means I can’t wear 97% of the items in my wardrobe, but I had thought I had a hit on the perfect outfit with a shoulder covering puffy dress and flat boots. I made the foolish decision to break my “no skirt” rule and ended up spending the whole (very windy) day holding down my skirt to avoid a Marilyn Monroe standing on a grate moment.
Luckily my sartorial gaffes aside it was a fantastic day and one of the best fests I’ve been to in recent memory. There wasn’t the overcrowding I generally associate with festivals so you could actually find a spot to relax and the beautiful Cockatoo Island location let you sit on the edge of the shore and watch the passing boats go by.
The coolest acts of the day were Afrirampo (see pic below), a Japanese noise pop duo, Robert Forster from classic Aussie pop act The Go-Betweens and Nick Cave.

There were no queues for anything (even the ladies bathroom), no jeering louts with Southern Cross tattoos and an art show featuring cats having tea parties!
Really, the only thing that could have improved it would have been an actual tea party with real cats and a pair of black tights…
