They paid tribute to one iconic solo female artist, and celebrated the new success of another at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.
Remembering Whitney Houston was the order of the night, but Adele still confirmed just how much everyone really freakin’ loves her by making the biggest awards sweep of the night.
The British singer picked up six awards, including Album of the Year for 21, and Record of the Year and Song of the Year for ‘Rolling in the Deep’.
The night did had an all over sombre mood though, with the music industry in mourning for Houston who died just the day before in her Beverly Hills hotel room.
LL Cool J paid tribute to the tragic singer.
“There is no way around this. We had a death in our family,” he said.
“So to me, the only thing that feels right is to begin with a prayer for a woman we loved, to our fallen sister Whitney Houston.”
Jennifer Hudson performed a spot-on rendition of Houston’s hit ‘I Will Always Love You’ as a tribute.
Amy Winehouse’s tragic death was also remembered, with her parents being invited up on stage with Tony Bennett to accept the award for best pop performance by a duo or group for Bennett’s ‘Body And Soul’ duet with Amy.
“We shouldn’t be here. Our darling daughter should be here,” Winehouse’s father, Mitch, said after he and the singer’s mother, Janis, had embraced Bennett.
The night was also a significant one for Chris Brown, who performed exactly three years after the incident that resulted in him being charged for assaulting ex-girlfriend Rihanna.
Brown was awarded Best R&B Album for “F.A.M.E.”
