When I first expressed an interest in the mag world, a friend who worked in the industry suggested I not even try – because it was way too hard to break in. I scored a job four weeks later. In a way it was fate. My mum worked in fashion, I loved writing and was obsessed with beauty products. Working at CLEO is amazing. Once a year we travel to an exotic location to shoot summer beauty, plus I get to see every beauty product before they hit the stores and meet the inspirational people behind the brands.

When Clinque’s Executive Director of Research and Development Worldwide (translation : skin expert) Dr Tom Mammone was invited to visit Australia, his first stop was Palm Cove, Cairns. Luckily I was invited along with 11other beauty editors to share the experience.

It’s not everyday you can get ‘alone time’ with such an expert, so I made the most of my half-hour interview. As distracting as it was staying at the lovely Peppers resort, I still managed to quiz Dr Mammone on all things skin related.

I’ll save most of it to use in relevant skincare stories, but to give you a taste:

Q: The best anti-aging ingredient available over the counter?
A: “Vitamin A will give the best results.”

Q Best preventative action you can take?
A: “Start wearing Superdefence SPF 25”.”

I’m sure everyone does this already, right?

Next stop was the Great Barrier Reef for a guided snorkelling tour with a marine biologist followed by a tranquil semi-submerged submarine trip and for the brave, a helicopter joy ride. The Great Barrier Reef is incredible - what a privilege to have seen it up close. Thank you Clinique!

Here are some happy snaps for your viewing pleasure:
