The 23-year-old reality TV queen chats to us about life on The Hills, being single and her best fashion tips.
You’re on The Hills now, was MTV excited to have you on board?
Well, saying yes was a really tough decision for me. I [had to ask myself], ‘So I want to go down this road? Or do I want to go [another] way?’ It was a really hard decision but I couldn’t be happier with the decision that I made.
What do you think you brought to the show?
I just feel like the show needed a little spice. They needed someone to come and stir things up, which I think I definitely did .
One of the reasons that Lauren Conrad mentioned for leaving the show was the paparazzi. How are you finding that?
Yeah, I mean I completely understand where she is coming from. You know, I also knew what I was signing up for. It’s the same as Laguna Beach – I knew what I was getting myself into.
Sometimes it’s hard but it just comes with the territory. It’s kind of a game you know, if you’re nice to the paparazzi they only put out good pictures of you. It’s just this whole game you have to play that comes with the business.
If you accept them it’s just going to be an easier ride for you?
Exactly, and there’s no point trying to battle it otherwise it’ll just make it ten times worse.
Practically everyone on the show has been offered to do things quite outside the realm of TV like book deals, clothing lines and so forth. What’s the most ridiculous thing you’ve been offered and declined?
Oh, that’s a good question. You get offered anything just to slap your name on it, even like cupcakes and stuff. Cupcake stores will ask you to put your picture on a cupcake. Like that, or diet pills or any sort of drinks, just anything. And I’m not going to out my name on anything just to get paid. I think it’s kind of cheesy and stupid.
What’s the dumbest rumour that you’ve ever heard about yourself?
That I have a younger brother and it said his name and his age. I don’t have a younger brother so it’s very random!
Are you still pursuing acting?
I am. Unfortunately The Hills takes up all of my time right now so I can’t even audition but it’s definitely something I want to do in the long run.
How much of your time does it take up? Is it a pretty much a 24/7 thing?
Well, yeah it’s six months and we only shoot three days a week which is great, but it’s six months which makes it hard to do any other projects.
What’s your best fashion tip?
You can’t wear something just because it looks good on a model on a runway. I’m only 5’3 and a half feet and most of that stuff doesn’t look good on me because I’m really short. You really have to dress for your body type.
Where would you like to be in five years from now?
Five years from now I would love to be producing some shows and also starring in another show.
Sticking to reality TV?
No, I would love to produce reality shows and then I would also love to star in a scripted show – a comedy – and I would love to have a shoe line one day. I’m obsessed with shoes.
What’s your favourite current pair?
Oh gosh, Christian Louboutin. Anything that he makes is amazing.
If you could have a guest spot on TV show at the moment what would it be?
Californication.
That’s a pretty saucy choice. Would you have to have a no nudity clause?
Yeah, I would have to. I don’t know about getting naked on camera.
And do you have a crush on David Duchovny?
I think he is so sexy on that show. The whole bad boy thing. I mean, he’s not really a bad boy, [it’s more to do with] the confidence.
Are you single at the moment?
Yes, I am single. I’m dating a little bit but I’m really enjoying being single.
What’s the best thing about being single?
Being able to do whatever I want, whenever I want. I’ve always sort of had boyfriends until about two years ago and I think that my last relationship was so serious and I was living with my ex-boyfriend that I literally went the complete opposite. [Now] I just really like having my alone time and freedom and I love hanging out with my girlfriends more than anything.
And has it helped you to sort of get to know yourself better?
Absolutely. I think that for a girl in between 18 and 23 you learn so much about yourself and you change so much each year. So it’s been a good time to be single.
The Hills Season 5 Part 1 is out on DVD March 4.
