I fell for mags in my final year of uni. I was hired as a student reporter for UNSW’s Blitz, where I could regularly be found popping bubble wrap, flinging miscellaneous objects at the overhead fan (then ducking for cover) and smacking my seat in order to expel the “butt dust” that had gathered there. I later volunteered at FBI radio and ACP. Not long after, I was hired as a copy editor and thus my foray into publishing began. I dig writing, singing, guitar playing and laughing at Mum and Dad.

Last week, in front of my very eyes, CLEO chief sub-editor Lizza lost her high-tea virginity. And I have to hand it to her, she waited for the most refined opportunity on which to do so.

Sheraton on the Park, Sydney, has successfully made high tea an even better excuse for girlie get-togethers than it already is. We trialled [read: stuffed our faces with] the “Contemporary Afternoon Tea Stand” which you can customise to feature 12 items from an assortment of gourmet treats.

We first had a chat with the Sheraton’s executive chef, Ewald Jeske, who explained exactly what it was we were about to devour with abandon.

Amazingly, Lizza and I sampled the Prosciutto, Pear and Endive Salad; Deep Sea Scallop with Green Tea Jelly; Gallery Tiger Prawn Caesar; Cappuccino Mousse and Biscotti; Turkish Delight; Pavlova with Raspberries and Passionfruit; and a delicious savoury crepe which we ate so quickly its official name escapes us.

This three-tiered stand is available every weekend and costs $89 (take your bestie and it’s $44.50 each!).

Being the fortunate duo we are, we were also invited to help our greedy selves to the Afternoon Tea Buffet, which is also available on weekends – for $45 per person. This never-ending bounty featured wraps, baguettes, finger sandwiches, a cheese plate, fruit, pastries, cakes and, the star attraction (for me, at least) freshly made scones.

There were waffles, too (made while you wait) and a selection of drinks, to wash all this decadence down with. We opted for a Max Brenner Hot Drinking Chocolate, which as you probably know, is the beverage to outshine all others.

If you want to completely blow the minds of all your girlfriends, make a high-tea reservation by calling (02) 9286 6000 or emailing fb.reservations@sheraton.com. Traditional High Tea Stands are available every day and the Contemporary High Tea Stands and Afternoon Tea Buffet both run from 11.30am-6pm Saturdays and Sundays. You might even see us there, as we swore on the day to make the Gallery Tea Lounge our new weekend hang out.
