New study finds link between irritable teens and depressed adults.

New research has shown that high levels of irritability in teens could be a potential predictor of adult depression.

The US National Institute of Mental Health researched the topic by surveying the parents of 631 teens about the irritability of their children.

Now, 20 years later, the same group of young people have been assessed for mood and anxiety disorders. It turns out that those who were irritable as teens were more likely to grow into adults suffering from depression or anxiety.

The study, published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, suggests that tantrums with teachers and peeves with parents are strong predictors of depression or anxiety disorders in adulthood.

Before you start worrying about your cranky teenage siblings, researchers noted that further studies are required to be carried out on the subject.

The study also suggests that youth irritability does not predict the development of bipolar disorder or other serious mental health disorders.

  • If this study is correct in its findings...then that perhaps explains the depressed western society we live in...OR..the whole thing is a complete generalization.(considering it was only a study of 600 plus)and if teens weren't pissed off sometimes, then we would think something was REALLY wrong?? I think we all just stress too much about everything!!!!!!!!!

  • Growing up I was a child of a happy & positive disposition. Being smaller in stature than most, I was bullied and picked on by my peers at school and eventually at work as an apprentice. I'm now 50 years old and have become withdrawn from society, not trusting anyone anymore as I don't believe people can be nice for no reason in this world. In turn I've become more and more depressed over the years with strong suicidal tendencies.

  • Sounds to me that they need to do a bit more research before making such an opened ended statement!

  • I don't know of many teens that don't get cranky. It's kind of part of being a teen. Ask the teens if the adults get cranky and it would probably be the same. I just find this silly!
