We chat to Aussie newcomers Amy Meredith’s singer Christian Lo Russo and guitarist Joel Chapman about their debut album, touring with big acts and skydiving in their underwear.
Have Your Say
"We want to know what you think! To tell us your opinion on this article, just add a comment below. "
Congratulations on your debut single ‘Pornstar’ reaching number one on the Hot 30 Countdown. What was your reaction when you heard the good news?
C: Everyone including management and some of the Hot30 team have promised to go sky diving in our underwear [to celebrate]!
How did your band name come about?
J: When Christian and I first got together and started writing music for the band, we were both actually seeing two different girls at the time. One being Amy and the other being Meredith. We started spending a lot of time together writing songs…
C: More time with each other than we did with our girlfriends.
J: Eventually they got over it and I guess the band sort of replaced them in a sense…
C: It was a bit of a joke at first and now we’re stuck with it!
How would you describe Amy Meredith’s sound?
C: It’s a combination of every style of music we listen to, and we listen to everything.
You’ve been supporting some pretty big acts lately (including an upcoming gig with Owl City). How does it feel to be on stage playing for such accomplished artists before the release of your own debut album?
C: It’s always exciting. But we just take it one day at a time. Owl City has a number one record, so it’s even more exciting because it’s going to be a massive amount of people.
Do you have any pre-show rituals or good luck charms?
J: We usually go and find a pub. Every day on the tour tends to involve a pub meal – we have schnitzel and mash every single day.
How would you describe the music on your upcoming album, and what was the inspiration behind it?
J: It represents the whole journey that we’ve been on. The first song on the album (Black Eyes) is actually the first song we ever wrote.
C: This album has been three years in the making – it’s made up of our life experiences along the way, including girlfriends coming and going and friendships ending.
If you could work with any artist, dead or alive, who would it ?
C: John Lennon.
J: Christian Lo Russo.
What would your rider requests be if you became super famous one day?
C: One member of Daft Punk or a Swedish masseuse.
J: A baby-pool filled with jelly and lots of alcohol and expensive drinks that we’ll never get.
C: Sadly, we’re definitely not at a stage when we can demand one wall painted blue, and the rest black. So we’d be pretty happy with a 50% off voucher for a meal at the bar.
