With orthorexia nervosa – or obsession with healthy eating - now a recognised medical term, it could well be time for that all-important reality check.

Have a read of these five tell-tale signs to find out if you're heading for a health obsession...

1. Comparing nutrition labels is one of your favourite pastimes

If you think it’s normal to spend two hours in the supermarket each week leaning over shelves scrutinising nutritional data then it might just be time for a wake-up call. According to medical expert Dr Marie Savard, "Excessive worrying about eating certain foods is a warning sign of orthorexia". Over-analysing your food labels is one sign you may be stressing a little too much.

2. You won't touch food that's not organic

Buying the odd pesticide-free fruit and veggie is definitely a wise idea, but do your potato chips really need to be organic too? When the FSA's latest report claims there's still "no evidence of additional health benefits from eating organic", you have to wonder if it's worth forking out for.

3. You regularly find yourself in specialist health stores without knowing why you’re there

Window shopping for a new pair of ankle boots is one thing, but browsing idly around a health food store staring wistfully into packets of seeded muesli bars is something quite a bit more disturbing. If you're latching onto a new food fad each week, you might have to ask yourself exactly what it is you're looking for.

4. You take more than three supplements a day and are under the age of 30

Does each morning see you popping more pills than a Class-A junkie? If you’re grabbing extra vitamins every which way you can, it's probably high-time to reassess your diet. “A lousy diet with supplements is still a lousy diet,” says Sari Greaves, a registered dietician at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. “No amount of vitamin-popping will ensure good health unless you’re eating a healthy, balanced diet.”
